What is CPA: how cost per result is worked out and where the ceiling goes

CPA is the average amount spent to get one result (a purchase, a lead or whatever conversion you chose): amount spent divided by results. Meta Ads Manager calls it “cost per result”.

English
CPA (cost per result)
Also called
Cost per result, cost per action, cost per acquisition

How it is used

CPA only means something against the most you can afford to pay, and that ceiling comes from your margin, not an industry average. Add budget while reported CPA sits under it; above it, find which step got more expensive first.

The ceiling comes from your margin, not an industry average

What one order leaves after goods, shipping, payment fees, packaging and returns (its contribution margin) is the most you can pay in ads for it. CPA has to sit below that to make money.

Other businesses’ CPA tells you nothing, because their order value and margin differ from yours.

When CPA rises, split it to find the step

CPA = CPM ÷ (CTR × conversion rate × 1,000). A higher CPM is the market or the auction; a lower CTR is creative fatigue or the wrong audience; a lower conversion rate is the page, the price or the checkout. Look at them separately to know what to fix.

For an ad set still in the learning phase, Meta says CPA is usually higher and results less stable, so do not judge on that period.

Formula: plug in your numbers

CPA = amount spent ÷ results

Plug inNT$12,000 ÷ 40 purchases = NT$300

Example

NT$12,000 spent, 40 purchases: CPA = 12,000 ÷ 40 = NT$300.

With an order value of NT$1,200 and about NT$400 of contribution per order, the ceiling is about NT$400. The current NT$300 is inside it, leaving about NT$100 per order.

Work out your own maximum CPA

Not to be confused with

“Cost per result goal” is a bid strategy, a target you hand the system to hold; CPA is the result measured afterwards. The two rarely match exactly.

FAQ

What is a reasonable CPA?

Anything under one order’s contribution margin. A shop with a NT$1,200 order value and a 33% contribution margin can pay up to about NT$400; other businesses’ CPA tells you nothing.

Why is there no CPA column in Meta Ads Manager?

Meta calls it “cost per result”; it is the same amount spent divided by results. What counts as a result depends on the ad set’s performance goal.
