What is the Meta Pixel: what it does, its events and how to check it
The Meta Pixel is a small piece of code on a website that records what visitors do there (actions called events, such as add to cart or purchase) and sends them to Meta to measure ads, build audiences and optimise delivery.

How it is used
Without the pixel, Meta knows who clicked an ad but not who bought: purchase-optimised ad sets, website custom audiences and catalogue ads all stop working. After installing it, click through with the Test Events tool to see each event arrive.
| Event | When it fires | Required parameters (Meta) |
|---|---|---|
| ViewContent | A visit to a content page you care about, such as a product page | Catalogue ads need content_ids or contents |
| AddToCart | An item added to the cart | Catalogue ads need content_ids or contents |
| InitiateCheckout | Checkout started, such as a click on “Checkout” | None |
| Purchase | A purchase completed, reaching the thank-you or confirmation page | currency, value |
| Lead | Details submitted knowing the business may get in touch, such as a form | None |
The pixel does three things
Meta describes the pixel as helping ads reach the right people (including past visitors), letting automated bidding find likely buyers, and measuring what people do after seeing an ad. All three run on events: standard events such as ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase.
Pixel events are organised into a dataset. Meta recommends adding the Conversions API so the server can recover events the browser loses; when both send the same event, deduplicate it with event_id.
How to check it after installing
Open Test Events in Events Manager, then view a product, add it to the cart and check out on your own site, and watch each event appear within about a minute and Purchase carry value and currency. If nothing shows, turn off ad blockers and try again.
Meta’s rules forbid sharing prohibited information through the pixel, such as health, financial or children’s data.
Example
A shop needs at least ViewContent on product pages (with content_ids), AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, and Purchase on the thank-you page (with value, currency and content_ids). For catalogue ads, content_ids must match the catalogue’s product IDs.
Not to be confused with
Dataset: the pixel’s events are organised into a dataset, which can also take Conversions API and app events. Events Manager now mostly shows dataset IDs.
FAQ
Are the Facebook Pixel and the Meta Pixel the same thing?
Yes. Facebook Pixel is the old name; Meta’s documentation now calls it the Meta Pixel, with its events organised into a dataset in Events Manager.
Do I still need the Conversions API if I have the pixel?
Meta recommends both: the pixel sends from the browser and the Conversions API from the server, recovering events lost to ad blockers and privacy settings. When both send the same event, deduplicate it with event_id.
