What is conversion rate: the formula, the base, and where to look when it is low
Conversion rate is conversions (a purchase, say) as a share of the step before them; the denominator (clicks, page views or sessions) has to be stated, because changing it gives a different number.

How it is used
Conversion rate measures what happens after the click: the page, the price, the checkout. High CTR with low conversion rate usually means the page does not match what the ad promised, or checkout is getting stuck.
State the base first
From the same week, conversion rate is 3.3% per link click, 4.2% per landing page view and something else again per GA4 session. There is no standard base, so whenever you compare or report it, say which one.
Google Ads defines it as conversions divided by the ad interactions that can be tracked to a conversion; GA4’s session key event rate is sessions with a key event divided by all sessions.
A low conversion rate usually lives after the click
Normal CTR with low conversion means people are curious but not buying. Check that the ad’s promise and the first screen of the page are the same thing, then mobile load speed, price and shipping appearing too late, and whether checkout demands an account first.
Traffic from Meta ads mostly opens in the in-app browser, so complete a checkout in that environment yourself.
Formula: plug in your numbers
Conversion rate = conversions ÷ the base (landing page views, clicks or sessions)
Example
1,200 link clicks, 960 landing page views, 40 purchases: per landing page view 40 ÷ 960 = 4.2%; per click 40 ÷ 1,200 = 3.3%. The gap is the 240 clicks that never saw the page load.
Lifting conversion rate from 3.3% to 4% at the same spend takes CPA from NT$300 to about NT$250.
Plug in your visitors and orders
Not to be confused with
GA4’s session key event rate: the base is sessions, and a session counts once however many events it has, so it cannot be compared directly with an ad platform’s conversion rate.
FAQ
What is a normal conversion rate?
It varies too much for an industry average to help: the base, the price point and the traffic source each move it severalfold. Compare with your own last month, on the same base.
Why do Meta and GA4 show different conversion rates?
Both the base and the attribution rules differ: Meta counts conversions against clicks or landing page views under its attribution setting, GA4 against sessions under its own models. They will not match; watch whether the gap is stable.
